What is a percentile?

In statistics, a percentile (or centile) is the value of a variable below which a certain percent of observations fall. For example, the 20th percentile is the value (or score) below which 20 percent of the observations may be found. The term percentile and the related term percentile rank are often used in the reporting of scores from norm-referenced tests. Source : wikipedia

The 25th percentile is also known as the first quartile (Q1), the 50th percentile as the median or second quartile (Q2), and the 75th percentile as the third quartile (Q3).

As per CBSE CCE Website Percentile is the percentage of students getting score below the score of a particular student. For example, if there are 100 students in a
class and 04 students are together at Percentile topmost (maximum) mark,  then the percentile rank of each of  these students will be 96.

Many students who appear in CAT, MAT , IIT JEE and other Entrance Exams come across the term Percentile and some confuse it with the Percentage

Are you afraid of Results ?

Now, when most of the exams are over and results are awaited, time seems to be a sheer torture, doesnʼt it?  What with mind already exhausted by exam stress that everybody seems to be a little too ʽconcernedʼ about your results and parents putting a ʽhumbleʼ front by saying ʽletʼs see what happensʼ(especially when youʼve not performed well so far, I mean AIPMT and IIT).  Itʼs hard to tell if students expect a lot from themselves or itʼs parents who talk them into believing that exams are the ultimate challenges that decide whether youʼre a winner or loser in life.  Isnʼt life worth much more than just some exam?  >> Read Article Are you afraid of Results

Hey Parent – talk to your child !

With the results out for Class XII exams, both students and parents are under great stress. Those who have got very good marks get their share of kudos, but are under the pressure to get admission in institution and course of their choice. Parents are under tension because they have to accompany their wards and shell out lot of money for ad-hoc admissions and wait for another result. But the fate of those who get lesser marks or fail to pass remains uncertain. Such students are under much anxiety and some of them even go to the extent of ending up their lives.

Parents-children communication vital

This is where the parents have to step in. Apart from consultants and counselors it is parents who are responsible to create a sense of responsibility and confidence in their kids. As such it is requested to all the parents that they should keep an eye on their children and hold regular discussions with them to help them overcome the stressful periods in result times
